From Cybersecurity Leader to Adventure Seeker: Living Life Without Regrets

In a world that’s constantly shifting and evolving, one thing has remained constant in my life: my unwavering passion for both cybersecurity and adventure. As I look back on my journey—from a young IT auditor to becoming a prominent leader in information security—I realize that my success in cybersecurity is deeply intertwined with my love for exploration.

I’m Preeti Singh, a proud Kanpurite who now calls Gurugram home. Over the past 15 years, I’ve carved a path in the realm of Information Security, Cybersecurity, and Data Privacy, leading teams and driving impactful change across various sectors. My current role as Director and Head of Information Security & GRC at OSTTRA is the culmination of years of hard work and learning. But the path hasn’t always been easy.

Transitioning from an IT auditor to CISO at a young age was a massive leap during my Aviva Life Insurance days—one that challenged me both personally and professionally. Surrounded by senior male colleagues in a male-dominated field, I often doubted my abilities and sought reassurance. But with time, I came to realize that success isn’t about gender—it’s about learning quickly, trusting your instincts, and seizing opportunities as they come.

As I gained confidence, I also began to recognize the need to support and empower other women to follow in my footsteps. I became passionate about advocating for more women to join the world of cybersecurity, whether through speaking at prestigious conferences like DSCI, NASSCOM, CII, and ISMG, or mentoring young women in schools and colleges. It’s my belief that cybersecurity isn’t just a technical field—it’s one that thrives on creativity, innovation, and diverse perspectives, all of which women bring in abundance.

But what truly drives me is the belief that life is an adventure. As much as I’ve dedicated myself to protecting digital landscapes, I also believe that the journey is about living fully, embracing experiences, and refusing to be bound by limits—whether in career or in personal pursuits.

“Life is a one-time opportunity, so live it the way you want. Regret is not an option.”

My love for travel has shaped my outlook on life and has been integral to who I am as a person and a leader. Whether it’s navigating the virtual dangers of the cybersecurity world or exploring the open roads of the world, I live with a sense of adventure.

Some of my most cherished memories come from thrilling road trips that pushed me out of my comfort zone and offered new perspectives. One of my most adventurous trips was a 15-day road trip to Leh Ladakh—a place where the rugged beauty of nature meets the serenity of isolation. The trip not only challenged me physically but also spiritually. The mesmerizing landscapes reminded me of the vastness of life beyond work, and the beauty of stepping away to rejuvenate my mind and spirit.

Then there was the 20-day road trip that took me from London to Ireland—a journey filled with rich history, scenic drives, and moments of introspection. There’s something magical about traveling in a car, the freedom to go where you want, stop when you need to, and immerse yourself in the local culture that technology often keeps us from. It was during this trip that I realized how vital it is to take a step back and enjoy life beyond the constant buzz of emails and meetings.

Another unforgettable adventure was a road trip through Spain and Ibiza, where I embraced the freedom of travel once again. The winding coastal roads of Spain, the vibrant nightlife of Ibiza, and the tranquil beaches were a stark contrast to the intensity of my work in cybersecurity. Yet, they reminded me that both work and life need balance—both can be equally exhilarating, and both can coexist in harmony.

It’s in these moments—whether I’m delving into a security breach or discovering a hidden gem on a road trip—that I’ve learned some of my most important life lessons. Each adventure has helped me grow as a person and as a leader. Just like the ever-changing threats in the cybersecurity landscape, life too is unpredictable. The key is to embrace it fully, to take risks, to step out of your comfort zone, and to keep evolving.

“Don't count the days; make the days count.”

As a leader, this philosophy guides how I approach both my professional and personal life. Whether it’s managing the risks associated with the ever-evolving cyber threats or planning a road trip across the world, the idea is the same: don’t wait for the perfect moment to take action.

My advice to women looking to step into the world of cybersecurity is simple: Believe in yourself. The industry is vast, dynamic, and full of potential. Cybersecurity needs diverse perspectives, and women are poised to make a monumental impact in shaping its future. Keep learning, seek mentorship, and never let self-doubt hold you back.

The cybersecurity world is an exciting, fast-paced field that demands creativity, resilience, and innovation—qualities that women bring in abundance. But it’s also a reminder that life is about more than just career achievements. It’s about finding joy in the journey, whether that’s securing a digital world or exploring the beauty of the physical one.

“Take risks: If you win, you will be happy; if you lose, you will be wise.”

Whether on the road or in the boardroom, I believe life is meant to be lived without regrets. As I continue to embrace both my love for cybersecurity and my passion for travel, I encourage every woman to pursue her dreams with confidence. Step out of your comfort zone, seek adventure, and trust in your abilities. You are capable of achieving greatness—both in your career and in your personal life.

The world of cybersecurity and the world beyond it are waiting for you. The question is—are you ready to take the leap?
